Eat/Drink Bar + Block

Bar + Block Steakhouse, Kings Cross

We at Neon seek to share with our readers and savour all facets of dining out in London, without spending a foolish amount of our take-home pay on a simple burger and fries and pint of craft beer. In saying that, there are a number of valuable culinary players in London that are putting excellent food and drink in our stomachs without putting extra-large holes in our pockets.

Henceforth, let us introduce Bar + Block Steakhouse: an all-day restaurant and bar that is serving up top-notch fare and a wide-range of craft beer and ciders, alongside cocktails and wine with a bill that is thankfully fit for us non-plutocratic types. Situated in Kings Cross, the 212-cover site includes a central bar area, open kitchen and stand-alone and booth seating. It’s the latest arrival to London’s steakhouse scene and has thus far put forward a good argument for paying a visit to the burgeoning drinking and dining N1 postcode.

But it’s steakhouse, right? Well yes, and although you may think it’s purely for the carnivorous type based on their tag line of “quality steak at high-street prices”, Bar + Block’s menu is so accommodating and palatable, it’s easy to opt for the affordable cheese board, stone baked flatbreads and the mac & cheese like we did, and forget that red meat even exists.

And the pedigree on offer is high: their steaks are sourced from British breeds grazed on the Pampas in South America, and so we envisaged having a glass of Malbec along with a 10oz rump and some beef dripping chunky chips.

Instead, we left three hours later wowed by the mac & cheese, as well as confessing sheepishly that we didn’t really need the sweet potato fries or the crispy beef salad. Oh, and the churros sundae for dessert. That neighbouring table got us all beady-eyed and envious…the waiter even paused for dramatic effect before placing it on the table. Shovel past the churros sticking out down to the brownie bits and creamy soft serve, and you’re on the straight and narrow to dessert heaven.

Throughout the week, Bar + Block is full of hotel stayers and local workers. “I’m voting work drinks here every week,” one says, examining the bar area whilst sipping on a cocktail (priced at half price during happy hour, Monday to Friday 5-7pm). “I can’t believe that was only £10,” says another after dining on the weekday lunch express menu.


All in all, Bar + Block is a fabulously enjoyable venue — there is the serious steak, yet we like that there is also a large tendency for the diners to let their hair down and relax. The modern design with copper finishes, statement lighting a neon cow ‘taste map’ – drawing connections between the farm and the plate – all provide a stylish setting.

We’ve since visited again to give that rump a try…satisfyingly so, it’s definitely high-quality steak at high-street prices. We’re keen punters for this kid to stay on the block.
